How to create an electronic, Internet-ready resume -- ASCII resume By Nimish Thakkar, Career Coach and Certified Professional Resume Writer |
If you recently posted your resume online, either on a job board, company website, or any other Web-based employment application, you may have been asked to paste an electronic or ASCII resume. Even if the application doesn’t request an electronic, ASCII resume file, there are distinct advantages to using a plain text ASCII format while pasting your resume online. ?> WANT YOUR RESUME PROFESSIONALLY DONE? 1. An ASCII (or electronic) resume format minimizes distortion of your resume when you paste it online. If you were to use a regular Word file, there is a possibility that symbols, such as bullets, would translate into undecipherable, garbled symbols at the receiving end. A simple bullet, for instance, might translate into #$%$@. Imagine how a bulleted resume would look at the hiring manager’s end. 2. An electronic (or ASCII) resume format would provide a uniform format to work with and counteract version issues, such as Windows-to-Mac or older-to-newer version problems. 3. Scanning systems and automated resume storage and retrieval systems would find it much easier to work with a text-based ASCII electronic file, as opposed to a Word or PDF file. Although many companies are now adopting sophisticated scanning systems, it is always safer to paste an electronic ASCII resume file.
Despite the numerous advantages of the ASCII or electronic resume format, most job seekers do not know what it represents or how to create one. The term ASCII is an acronym for The American Standard Code for Information Interchange. In simple layman terms, it is a plain text format of your resume without all the fancy bulleting, underlining, italics, images, and other visually-appealing features.

Here are some simple steps that will help you create an electronic ASCII resume file:
1. Open your regular Word Doc resume file. 2. Create a backup version before attempting to create an ASCII resume. 3. Click on File -> Save As 4. Under “Save as Type” choose the “Plain Text” option. 5. Click Save 6. Check “Insert Line Breaks” 7. Click “Ok”, 8. Save the file to your desired destination. 9. Open the ASCII electronic resume file and adjust it manually to make the document look uniform and visually-appealing. 10. You may also want to open the file using your text file editor in order to eliminate any visual issues. In case you see “?” in place of bullets or symbols, substitute them with “*”. You could use Word’s Ctr+F command to auto replace all “?” with “*”.
Easy!
